I have been born 'catholic'
I have been born 'catholic', raised as such, and expected to be such. The problem is that I don't really agree with the church on many points. I hate the idea that one religion is right over another and so on. I personally hold the views of an Agnostic. If you don't know what this is, you should read this. If you're too lazy to read it, this is my short version... you can not prove or disprove a god. As far as for those who strongly believe in something... good for you, if it works, stick with it. I can respect that, just don't be a religion dealer. Drugs Many of society's older citizens like to believe that all the problems in the world can be blamed on sex, drugs, and rock & roll. To hell with that. I say, do what you want, just do it in moderation. If you want to relax, kick back with a beer or two, but if you think getting tanked every night of the week, by yourself, and throwing up all day is an image of a good time, then you're just not my kind of person. I'd have to say that I used to be a lot less tolerant of people who smoked and so on, but I have come to believe that people should have the right to do it, as long as I'm not choking on their second hand smoke, or bleeding internally for their lack of driving judgment. Again, do what you want, just don't hurt anyone else while you're at it. School Shootings Before I get into it, I just want to remind everyone that school shootings have been dropping in number over the years, just as teen violence has... it is the media coverage that has increased. With that said, I would recommend the movie 'Bowling for Columbine' by Michael Moore because I think it covers this topic from a variety of angles. People try to pinpoint the cause, but it's far to complicated for a one word answer, but I think if we tackled poverty and health issues, we'd all be better off. Justice I think there are a lot of flaws in the system. Do you actually believe that someone's $1000/hr lawyer will beat your pro bono lawyer? Chances are, the more money you have, the more you can get away with. Despite this inequality, there are others. Don't believe me? Watch 'The Life of David Gale'. This movie will influence your perspective on the death penalty. I am against the death penalty, and I am also against more jail time. Most of the people occupying our jails, and let me tell you... the numbers are staggering... are really in need of better rehabilitation. When someone is addicted to drugs or just can't stop stealing, locking them away isn't going to 'teach them a lesson'. We need to handle things appropriately. Aliens One of the biggest moneymakers and jokes of our time is the concept of an alternate form of life. Since I have been about 5 years old, I have been intrigued by the possibility. I watch all the documentaries on the Discovery channel and the learning channel... Many cases were poorly recorded, but I found some of them to be believable. I am not willing to rule out the fact that there is more beyond what we know. Environment As you may or may not know, I am a registered member of the green party. I am also the treasurer of the UPJ Campus Greens. The way I see it, we only get one earth to mess around with, and I think we've done enough damage... it's about time we clean up our mess. This means more recycling, better/cleaner fuel (not oil), and stronger enforcement of pollution regulations for industry. I am not exactly a tree hugger, but I do indeed give a damn. Abortion Well, since this is a hot topic - always - I thought I would voice my opinion. As a liberal, I think that women have the right to decide what does or does not happen to their bodies. Just as I do not want anyone making decisions for me, I do not want to make decisions for anyone else. I think this should be up to the individual, not the government. Although I can accept a woman's right to choose, I do think she has a responsibility to choose early on. There is no good excuse for an abortion after the 1st trimester. Along with this, I also believe we need better sex education and more available birth control services. With these two things, I believe the need for abortions would decrease (as would teen pregnancy). Peer Pressure Well, I can't say that I have really ever experienced serious peer pressure... you know... the kind you see in movies where a group of kids makes some other kid drink some alcohol or whatever. I do think a lot of it has to do with your own strength as a person as well as the people you spend time with. My friends were never jerks about it, so it wasn't an issue. Stupid, don't fall for it. Image So you 'look' like a geek... well you must be one then, right? As 5 cent Deposit says, "who'd have thought that being cool came down to the clothes you wear?" Although I have been guilty of judging others, I have learned my lesson. Sure, sometimes you're right... that cheerleader really is an idiot, but there are times when you can have some great conversations with them too. Whoever said 'clothes make the man' was an idiot. If you catch yourself doing it, stop. That's step one in making things better.
